Leaf seems a bit lazy in updating the software for the Magic there are some things you can do about it. (Well me not updating this site can probably also be seen in the same light.)

So why would you update the stock firmware of the phone you may ask? Well… There are some things not offered out of the box.

Really simple USB Internet tethering

Multitouch

Updated interface

Improved software support

just to name a few…

Now this is my no means a walk in the park for the average user; though I’ll try to make it as easy as I can.

How to upgrade your Vodacom HTC Magic to Cyanogenmod.

So you have a Vodacom Branded HTC magic and you decided to run Cyanogen or maybe even an HTC Hero ROM and thought you’d give it a try. And for some reason you can’t get the instructions to work.

I’ll try and be brief and explain things in an easy to understand method.

But first the usual disclaimer - If you f8ck this up is your own problem.

The Vodacom HTC Magics I’ve seen appears to be the PVT32A model - Its got more ram etc.
Here’s how to check: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking

Mine also has what appeared to be a Perfect SPL installed and I also couldn’t use the Cyanogen Recovery 1.4; I suspect it’s because its primeraly developed for the G1 or 32B model magic.

Instead of trying to change the SPL (Seems most phones get bricked this way) I used a little program called flashrec to load the Amon_Ra recovery image (Use the H version as its for the 32A)

Now to install Cyanogenmod
Some reading material to get you started:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream/Magic32A_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod

So grab yourself the latest version of cyanogenmod, the 32A kernel and Defanged DRC83.

By now I assume you’ve loaded the Amon_Ra recovery image (H) with flashrec.

I would also suggest you install the android SDK.
A good guide can be found here.

Copy the following files to the SD card:

Defanged DRC83 - eg. DRC83_base_defanged.zip

Cyanogenmod - eg. update-cm-4.*-signed.zip

32A Kernel Port - eg. bc-4.*-ebi1-signed.zip

NB: don’t run a 4.2.7.1 kernel on a 4.2.8 build. make sure the version mumbers of your kernel match the cyanogenmod version exactly!

Now boot up the phone into recovery mode (Home + Power)

Use Nandroid to make a backup of your phone.
Do a “Wipe data/factory reset”
Apply Zip: DRC83_base_defanged.zip
Apply Zip: update-cm-4.*-signed.zip
Apply Kernel Port Zip: rad-4.*.zip or bc-4.*-ebi1-signed.zip (depends on who released the latest port: rad - Radix999,bc - bcrook)
Since your’e really nervous you could always watch the adb logcat.

If everything went according to plan you should now we able to start up the phone and log in with your google username and password!

So you got yourself a new cellphone with a touchscreen, gigs of storage and more processing power than the first Appolo mission ever had. Mp3’s are overrated. Watching your AMV’s and latest Bleach episode whilst Bunta Fujiwara is driving you home in his AE86 Sprinter Trueno is more your style…

Now there are a lot of ways to do this.. (for the laxy spoon fed version read on a bit) You can get yourself VirtualDub, resize the video, extract the audio, use besweet to encode the audio (don’t forget the lame plugin) Oh! command line too hard? Get Belight then! You’ll need Nero’s dll’s as well. Then get an MP4 muxer. (I perfer the IBM toolkit) then start on the video. You need the codecs…. Sod this.

For those technical guys that just want the cool info here it is:

Older Phones

Newer Phones

Basic video

MPEG-4 Visual Simple, Level 0

176×144 (QCIF)

Frame rate (fps)

15

320×240 (QVGA)

Frame rate (fps)

20

25

Bit rate (kbps)

140

Bit rate (kbps)

96

96

If you’re unsure consult GSMarena on what your screen size and if it does support MP4 files.

You can always drop the framerate a but and push up the bitrate. It should give you better quality though fast action scenes will look choppy. If the audio tends to get out of sync drop both.

Now for the spoon fed lazy version…

Since were doing the lazy version get yourself MediaCoder (If you don’t have AVIs MKVs or any other files on PC and you want to grab it off your DVD’s go to Doom9 and get some guides and software there)

Although there is separate MediaCoder versions for Mobile, Ipod, PSP etc. I would probably recommend the full version even though the Mediacoder 3GP Edition (It just says 3GP Edition - it can actually do MP4 files) works just as well.

Load the file(s) you want to encode.

Hit the “Extension” button (It’s the one that looks like a PSP)

It will prompt you to reset values to Defaults. (Why not? Its the first time you’re doing this right?

Now select “Generic Mobile Phone” You should get something like this:

You’ll notice it looks easy from here on but the devil is in the detail. Lets change these values to something a bit more relevant first. You’ll see right away selecting “High Quality” puts the bitrate over 300. Well thats ok seeing as I can’t select select a framerate higher than 15 fps.

So I select High quality

I leave the format as is (MP4)

And I set my resolution to 320×240

Well now you can either keep that window open or close it. (I close mine as I have no more need of it)

In your main Window select “Options” “User Interface Mode” “Normal Mode

This looks a bit more beefed up.

On the right Choose “Nero Encoder”And change your audio bitrate to 64, any higher. Encodeing audio and video is all about compromise.

Now select the “Video” tab make sure its set to bitrate based and specify a value of 300.

The format should be “Xvid” and the container “MP4″

Make sure to select the “Format” button and and enable the “Optimize for cartoons” option. (It is anime afterall)

Ok you’re halfway there.

Now select the picture tab.

Change your framerate to 25 and select your Crop method.

You can play around here getting different results.

Crop to fit

Expand to fit

As you can see different cropping methods give different results. Its a trade off between utilizing the maximum screen area or seeing the whole picture. Though you can always use the unused screen area for subtitles. :p

Now set the output folder and hit the start button!

Thats it. All thats left to do is to copy it to your phone. For that matter add an entire series to the list and it will batch encode them all.

As I said when we started If this doesn’t work for you try dropping the framerate, resolution and bitrate to suit your phone.

What can I say after watching the first episode of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki? According to anidb it’s also known as “Frenzied Family Diary” and well its a frenzy all right.
Enough yapping here’s a teaser to get you drooling…
[See post to watch Flash video]
Now hit the “More…” button if you’re still interested…

Still here? Good.

The short version of the story is;

A 1000 years ago Enka was bent on destroying the world, however humans destroyed hi. With his dying breath he swore one of his children will destroy mankind. Enter Kyoka our lovable catgirl, spawn of Enka. Instantly she turns the world of Midarezaki Ohka (a member of the Japanese Imperial Agency for Supernatural Phenomena) upside down and inside out by getting married to him, turning him into her plaything and setting out to collect their children (not so ironically also supposedly spawn of Enka)

Not to spoil too much of a good story Here’s some pictures:
